High-Carb Diet May Increase Risk of Dementia

If you're interested in protecting your brain health and preventing dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, the research is pouring in support of a key strategy...namely, avoiding sugar and carbohydrates together, including gluten.

By Dr. Mercola
Last year, I interviewed Dr. David Perlmutter-probably the leading natural medicine neurologist in the US, from my perspective-whose NY Timesbest-selling book, Grain Brain, has brought this issue to the forefront of medicine.  He recently expanded on this topic in an interview in Alternative and Complementary Therapies, where he cites even more research showing a high-carb diet may be detrimental to your brain.

Higher Blood Sugar Levels Are Bad for Your Brain
According to recent research published in Neurology, chronically higher blood sugar levels have a profoundly negative influence on cognition, which the researchers believe is "possibly mediated by structural changes in learning-relevant brain areas."  One of the most important aspects of the study, however, was that these negative effects occurred even in people without type-2 diabetes, which suggests even if you're "healthy", keeping your blood sugar levels lower than what is typically considered "normal" is probably still best for your brain health.

It's becoming increasingly clear that the same pathological process that leads to insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes may also hold true for your brain. As you over-indulge on sugar and grains, your brain becomes overwhelmed by the consistently high levels of insulin and eventually shuts down its insulin signaling, leading to impairments in your thinking and memory abilities and eventually causing permanent brain damage.
Personally, I have always been a pusher/influencer of higher fats over higher carbohydrates for both my male and female clients wanting to control weight/weight-loss, and I also found that studies show higher carbohydrate diets increase dementia risk by 89 percent; diets higher in fat, the risk decreased by 44 percent. Dr. Perlmutter says: "Carbohydrate calories, which elevate blood glucose, are dramatically more detrimental to human physiology, and specifically to human health, than are the calories derived from healthful sources of fat.  The diet I recommend-high in fat and low in carbohydrates-has simply been what we have eaten for a million years, so it has a bit of a track record.  The diet people are now consuming, diets dreadfully high in carbohydrates and low in fat, as our governmental institutions are recommending, is the biggest challenge to human physiology that we have ever experienced, and this is very, very worrisome."

For the individual interested in increasing energy, weight-loss, weight maintenance, and more, a proper nutritional plan is vital for success and balance within the body.  This balance is what gives the body what it needs to be successful.

I wanted to share this study on carbohydrates and how it relates to dementia to show how unbalanced nutritional plans can be linked to health risks.  Be safe in your diet and in your exercise; every decision counts.

Who Has Heard of Glutathione?

I have had a few great educational conversations with clients this week over the topic of Glutathione.

Glutathione is naturally occurring substance that acts as:
  • a detoxifier
  • an antioxidant
  • immune system booster
Additionally, it can help your body repair damage caused by:
  • Stress
  • Pollution
  • Radiation
  • Infection
  • Drugs
  • Poor Diet
  • Aging
  • Injury
  • Trauma
  • Burns

Sounds awesome, right !?  It is...

Not a lot of people know that you can take Glutathione.

Orally
or

Intramuscluar
Glutathione is not well absorbed orally, making the injection delivery a much more effective option.
The oral supplement seen here is great for recycling the glutathione that the body naturally produces and has inside of itself.
This is a preventative supplement used to reduce the free radical damage in the body and help prevent disease and inflammation. So if you are after anti-aging at the highest degree, check out Glutathione!

Will you be accountable enough to not skip breakfast?

It's Good to Eat Your Breakfast

We have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  But are you responsible enough not to skip it?

Here are 3 reasons to support the reason why you want to eat your breakfast each day:

1.  Weight-Loss:
Eating breakfast helps your body calorically balance your daily intake of food, by starting the day off on the right track; giving it calories - metabolic 'conditioning' if you will, for the day, and also allows the body to manage your food intake throughout the day.
When you miss breakfast, your tendency is to eat more later during lunchtime or when snacking. Feel hungry the MOST during the early afternoon?  Hmm.. I have written many
nutritional guidance plans, and I find 'yes' to be the most common answer to this question.  Consider this, and place a change in motion if this is you.  Don't just eat fruit; make it your personal goal to include protein and fiber in your breakfast to help you feel full and satisfied for the remainder of the day.

2.  Breakfast Does the Heart Good:  Studies show people who eat breakfast, particularly whole-grain cereals, have lower cholesterol and insulin levels.

3.  Metabolic Benefits: ...of eating first thing in the morning? HUGE! - Just look at the Body-Clock:

In the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a study pointed to the importance of consuming calories first thing in the morning.  Dr. Farshchi with the University of Nottingham, UK found that "If the first thing somebody eats in the day is a mid-morning snack and has the cereal later in the day. When this happens, he or she does not get the full metabolic benefits."

Making time for breakfast is a healthy way to start your day.

Fix a bowl of oatmeal with some berries, or have low fat yogurt with oats and fruit.  Prepare meals in advance to help save time in the morning.  Make your own protein, or cereal bars.  Cut up fruit, portion snack bags of nuts, and cook hard boiled eggs to eat and go.

Think of your morning commute.  Is it long? The best morning meal is a balanced mix of healthy choices that will keep you satisfied longer than your morning commute.  No commute and work from home?  Then consider how hungry you feel in the morning with a healthy exercise regimen performed throughout the week.

Elect whole fruits over juice, as they contain more fiber; consider adding protein from an egg or nuts to help you feel fuller, longer.

If You Feel a Current Void in Your Life, How is Your Nutrition?

Have you ever had cravings for particular sweet treat or salty snack, but the craving doesn’t go away after eating it?  Sometimes the cravings we think are for foods are actually for other things missing in our lives. Maybe you really want a break from work...maybe just a brisk walk would satisfy? But, you won’t find either of these things on your plate.

When I learned the truth about cravings, I was also surprised to learn how important it was for me to feel fulfilled in other areas of my life in order to become truly healthy. When I did get healthier, my whole life changed.

And all those cravings? They disappeared because I was being “fed” in other areas of my life, and I was conscious of eating foods that kept me healthy and energized.

Learning how to eat right for your body's needs, can give you so many benefits for life and better your environment.  A possible career shift, falling in love, taking a trip to relax and mentally "check out", all are great examples of lifestyle change that can be triggered with proper nutrition.

Many smartphones have apps that can help you track your nutrition; the app keeps a record of what you are eating and then sums up the amount of calories for you at the end of the day.
Jawbone UP™
Another device, the Jawbone Up™ can not only track your nutrition, but also your exercise amount and when you are sedentary for more than 20 minutes, it will tell you to get up and do something! HA!
